Selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Nevermind changed the entire musical landscape and forever altered the course of Dave Grohl’s life. Grohl’s personal connection to Sound City began with the 1991 recording of Nirvana’s breakthrough album, Nevermind. The board, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog recording equipment, having recorded such artists as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Guns and Roses, Metallica, NIN, Rage Against The Machine and countless other musical legends over the past 40 years. SOUND CITY, the film, was conceived by Grohl after purchasing the legendary custom-built Neve 8028 recording console from Sound City Studios last year. The new tracks–featuring an amazing and idiosyncratic cast of collaborators including Paul McCartney, Grohl’s former Nirvana and current Foo Fighters bandmates, Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, Trent Reznor, Joshua Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Lee Ving of Fear, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford of Rage Against The Machine and more–passionately exemplify SOUND CITY’s celebration of the human element of musicianship and recording in an increasingly digital world.

Grohl could have compiled a ‘Greatest Hits’ of Sound City’s Hall of Fame, but while Real to Reel may not be quite as essential or classic, he’s certainly captured the magic and depth of over 40 years of shifting styles. Other peaks include Fleetwood Mac’s Steve Nicks dripping her molten majesty over the vintage AM radio rock of ‘You Can’t Fix This’, and the deceptively fierce little devil of the slow-burning ‘From Can To Can’t’ with Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, Cheap Trick’s Nielsen and Scott Reeder from Kyuss. The tension gradually builds ever-skywards until a squelchy bass solo and a sweet, explosive release. Mantra is by far the most cinematic piece here, as simple piercing drums underlie a looping but playfully brooding Homme bassline and haunting Reznor keys.

If the partnership of Grohl, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Josh Homme on album highlight ‘Mantra’ is anything to judge their collaboration on the upcoming Queens of the Stone Age record, then you should all be salivating for more. While it may not be the Second Coming, it’s more than worthy of two trademark thumbs up and Scouse-drawled “fab”. Nirvana 2.0 it ain’t, in fact musically it shares a similar territory with early Smashing Pumpkins while Macca does his utmost to growl a Robert Plant howl over the top. Most notably of all was Sir Paul McCartney who appears on the aptly-titled ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ alongside the surviving members of Nirvana. M83, Sound City Players: best new tracks of the weekįortunately, Dave Grohl is Rock’s Mr Nice Guy, so roping in a few famous friends for the ride was always going to be easy.
